Saint Basil Academy offers a Varsity and JV Softball team.


Steve Sonneborn graduated from Dobbins Technical High School. During his time there, he played as Quarterback on the Football team and Short Stop on the Baseball team. He was their four-year starter and won the All-Public award. He then continued on to Philadelphia Community College for a year, before joining the Navy for three years. Steve is an expert coach with experience in coaching all levels. His coaching career started with T-Ball, coaching 10 years old and under. In addition, he helped run a Little League program at Feltonville Recreation Center. He expanded his coaching experience to other areas of the United States, coaching both Baseball and Football in New Orleans, Louisiana. Sonneborn has also coached and umpired in Men’s Softball leagues. Steve started coaching female athletes in 1981. He coached 16-18 year old girls Softball, a women’s team, and a women’s Flag Football team. He started coaching Softball at the High School level in 1994 as the JV coach at Archbishop Wood before receiving the head coaching position at Saint Basil Academy in 1999. Some of Steve’s coaching accomplishments are receiving “Volunteer of the Year Award” in 1982 for dedication to Girls Softball Program from the Philadelphia Department of Recreation and receiving a “Liberty Bell Award” from the Mayor of Philadelphia in 1985 for the organization of a Baseball team from Puerto Rico to come to Philadelphia to play games against inter-city youth. Saint Basil Academy’s Softball team has achieved many accomplishments, including winning three AACA Championships, an undefeated league streak of 63 straight games (2003-2007), three District One Championships (2008, 2014, 2015) and a Final Four finish in 2015. Saint Basil Academy has had multiple students/athletes play at the Division One level in College as well as many others playing at high level Division II & III schools.
