I am an administrative assistant in the Main Office here at SBA. I graduated from LaSalle University in 1990 with a Bachelors Degree in English and a Minor in Business. After graduation, I worked at GMAC Mortgage for five years and then Ernst and Young LLP until I married and started a family. Presently, I work part-time in Institutional Advancement Department of SBA.

As assistant principal of Saint Basil Academy, Lesia Penkalskyj continues the long history with our great school since 1976. She is an SBA alumna (1980), and came back to Saint Basil’s as a full-time music teacher in 1990. Lesia earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in music and K-12 Music Education Certification from Chestnut Hill College, and a Master of Music from West Chester University (1987). Her 37-year teaching experiences started in high school, and has included instruction in piano, children’s choirs and music groups, guitar and vocal instruction, and co-directing her parish choir. Her administrative experience began at West Chester University with the WCU Community Music School, and continued as Branch Administrative Coordinator at the Jenkintown (now Willow Grove) Branch of Settlement Music School. Now, as assistant principal, Lesia is excited to continue work in developing relationships with all SBA constituents, and to be instrumental in developing all facets of our wonderful students’ educational paths. She is also thrilled to serve as department head of the Visual and Performing Arts department, and to coordinate the growth and development of our new Music Academy.

After receiving my Bachelor’s Degree in English from Saint Joseph’s University, I entered the business world, managing high-end fine dining restaurants in Philadelphia, and working for two celebrity chefs. Although my time in the hospitality industry was fast-paced and exciting, I always felt compelled by my love of literature to return to academia, and, perhaps more importantly, inspired and driven to educate and empower the next generation of young women to have their voices and stories heard. After returning to my alma mater, Saint Joseph’s University, for graduate school in Secondary Education, I was thrilled to join the incredible community at Saint Basil Academy as a member of the English department in 2013.

As an English teacher here at Saint Basil Academy, I strive to impart on my students the same sense of wonder and excitement that I feel when cracking open the spine of a new book and entering into an entirely uncharted universe. From classic novels like Pride and Prejudice, emotional and psychological examinations of humanity in Hamlet, or contemporary poetry from Taylor Mali and Billy Collins, my favorite thing about the written and spoken word is the ability to share and understand the human experience through literature.
