Ms. Janet Iafrate

Iafrate

I am elated to return to the school that helped me to put down roots in Philadelphia and to fall in love with teaching English.  Originally from West Virginia (born and raised!), I moved to the Point Breeze section of South Philly in 2007 and have remained there ever since.  I studied English at Fordham University in the Bronx, taught with Good Shepherd Volunteers in Brooklyn, then continued my postgraduate studies in modern English and film at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in England.  Outside of Saint Basil Academy, I have taught English with the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and creative writing at the University of the Arts Pre-College Program.  I am also proud to have been part of the founding English faculty at Cristo Rey Philadelphia, teaching sophomore English for two years.

During my time as a Panther, I primarily taught freshmen English and creative writing; I also moderated the Laureate publication, CSC, and chaperoned Kairos retreats and Travel for Teens trips.  Those five years are woven into my heart in a way that is difficult to summarize, as each class, retreat, CSC trip–really, each student– so uniquely impacted my life and helped me to become a better teacher and person.  My former classmates are now friends and sisters, and I continue to be inspired by the work and positivity they so selflessly put out into the world.
