Christian Service

Christian service is an intrinsic part of witnessing and living out the Gospel values of Jesus. Our mission at Saint Basil Academy is to build the mind of leaders through service and compassion.  Through service opportunities and experiences, students learn to turn empathy into action. Following Jesus’ example of living and working among the people, our goal is to have our students bring a healing presence to our world in need beyond graduation.  SBA Cares at Saint Basil Academy is a service-oriented group that teaches our students to take their gifts and talents and share them with others. SBA Cares regularly provides opportunities for students to volunteer at Face to Face, Ronald McDonald House, The Breathing Room Foundation, Rydal Park, Habitat for Humanity, Wreaths Across America, Toys for Tots,  St. Martin de Porres, La Salle Academy, Special Olympics, and Bringing Hope Home.

Saint Basil Academy has made Christian service a requirement at each grade level and is mandatory for graduation from Saint Basil Academy.  Rooted in the school mission and philosophy, opportunities for service and experiences are offered where students learn to be sensitive and caring to others.  Following Jesus’s example of living and working among the people, our goal is to have our students bring a healing presence to our world in need.  All service requirements are detailed in the Christian Service Handbook below.

Christian Retreats

Retreats give us the opportunity to remove ourselves from the noise of life and to enter into a quiet space with God.  Students attend a retreat each year at Saint Basil Academy.  The cost for freshman, sophomore, and junior retreats is covered in your tuition cost.  The cost for the senior retreat is covered in your senior fee.

Freshmen and sophomore students attend a one-day retreat at the Basilian Spirituality Center, located at the Motherhouse of the Sisters of the Order of Saint Basil the Great.

Juniors attend an off-campus, one-day retreat in the spring.  This retreat varies from year to year.  The junior retreat could entail a day of service or a visit to a religious site or shrine.

Seniors attend a retreat especially written for the students of Saint Basil Academy named “Koinonia.”  Koinonia is a Greek word found in the New Testament that means “Christian fellowship.”  This is a 2-night retreat held at Saint Raphaela Center in Haverford, PA.  Students are led by adult and student leaders.  This is an opportunity for the students to grow in relationships with Christ as well as their classmates.  Koinonia retreats offer seniors the opportunity to be away from the distractions and normal routines of ordinary life and to focus on God.

Seniors have the option of attending Koinonia in the fall or spring.  Student leaders are selected by an application process.  If a student wants to apply to lead in the fall of their senior year, they must attend first as a junior in the spring.  If a student wants to apply to lead in the spring of their senior year, they must first attend fall Koinonia.

Each summer, a group of students from Saint Basil Academy attends a Youth Conference hosted by the Franciscan University of Steubenville.  These conferences occur in dozens of cities all over the country throughout the summer.  This is an opportunity for students to meet and worship with thousands of fellow teens from all over the world.  Students hear from renowned Catholic speakers, participate in Mass, Reconciliation, and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.

We believe in offering a well-rounded curriculum, which utilizes modern technology so that students may meet the challenges of a global community with a solid educational foundation and self-confidence.
